Praise, Work in Process

Praise began as part of a series of solos and duos created in 2019-2020 between NYC and the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in response to a particular moment of human destruction and strife. As those mountains bore the impact of a terrible and terrifying hurricane in 2024, it was another reminder of why human beings have always feared the Old Gods; gods of nature who awaken and represent our vulnerability to uncontrollable power.

Since moving to these mountains, Weare has been exploring symbolic dances of praise and appeasement for Old Gods, arguments for mercy, forbearance and valor; in order to do what human beings have always done in the face of overwhelming nature: comfort ourselves and others.

This solo served as one of the first explorations into filmmaking for Weare in the Study, Red Road, filmed in 2019, with the rich color landscape lending its power and gravitas.

The newest iteration of Praise was filmed in residence at American Dance Festival in 2024, as an embodiment of an imagined warrior-priestess, a dance-plea to Old Gods, an offering of nature worship, performed by the inimitable KWCo dancer Nicole Vaughan-Diaz.
